There are few interior design projects as exciting as repainting! The chance to refresh and revitalize your space while showing off your personal style is truly incredible – plus, a renovated kitchen will work wonders for your home’s value. But it’s not always clear just how often this project needs to occur. Continue reading to learn more about how often you should repaint your home’s interior, along with some other helpful pointers to keep in mind.
High-Traffic Rooms
You’ll need to repaint areas in your home with higher traffic more frequently than those rooms that see fewer people/usage. Typically, the highest traffic areas in homes include hallways, entryways, kitchens, and bathrooms, as well as occasionally living areas. Consider the following:
- Hallways/Entryways: Hallways and entryways see the most traffic out of all the rooms in your room, so their paint often sustains a little more wear than other rooms. Try to repaint these spaces every 3 to 5 years.
- Kitchens: Aim to repaint your kitchen every 3 or 4 years. These gathering spaces also tend to be messy, greasy, smoky, and at times, unpredictable. You never know when your current paint might sustain damage.
- Bathrooms: Bathroom walls need to withstand moisture and humidity, so water-based paints are normally preferred. That said, expect to repaint your bathrooms every 5 or so years.
- Living rooms: High-usage living rooms and dens can be repainted as often as you’d like since they’re the go-to gathering spaces within homes. That said, every 5 to 7 years is a good rule of thumb.
Medium and Low-Traffic Rooms
Rooms with less traffic don’t need to be repainted as frequently, unless your tastes change often. But you shouldn’t neglect any room in your home, even that spare room that hardly sees usage. For medium-traffic rooms, you should aim to repaint as follows:
- Bedrooms: Master bedrooms usually need to be repainted every 10 years, as with other bedrooms that are used regularly. Children’s rooms, however, usually need to be repainted more often as their preferences change.
- Laundry rooms: These rooms are similar to bathrooms since they’re often small and need to be water-resistant, so paint them just as often.
The lowest-traffic rooms will likely include your dining room, spare bedrooms, and guest bathrooms. You can often get away with repainting these rooms every 10 years or so, but it also depends on their usage as well as your personal preferences.
