5 Interior Design Trends It’s Time to Move on From

Your home isn’t just the place where you live – it’s an expression of yourself! This means that you should want its style, color, and overall atmosphere to reflect your personality while also remaining modern and fresh. If it’s been a while since you’ve given your home a makeover or a fresh coat of paint, you may still be stuck with a trend or design scheme that feels old, tacky, or outdated. Changing things up has never been easier! Here are a few design trends that it’s time to say bye to.

1. Popcorn Ceilings

These textured ceilings have certainly had their fair share of time in the limelight, but these days, most homeowners have finally moved on from them in favor of more modern looks. Not to mention, popcorn ceilings in older homes might pose a health risk due to the presence of asbestos, which is incredibly dangerous when breathed in. It’s always advised to have a professional team remove popcorn-textured ceilings for this reason.

2. All Whites and Grays

White and gray are two of the most versatile colors out there, coming in a wide array of shades and hues. For a long time, all-white kitchens seemed to be everywhere, as well as spaces that incorporated huge amounts of neutral grays. These days, color is making a comeback – homeowners now often prefer patterns and colors, particularly those that evoke nature or feel visually interesting and emotionally reassuring.

3. Animal Print Patterns

For a while, animal print patterns seemed to be everywhere – rugs, furniture, paintings, fur coats, or anywhere else where you could fit zebra stripes or cheetah spots. While these patterns gave rooms an exotic and worldly feel, they tend to come off as a little tacky in 2025. Many homeowners these days tend to prefer more biophilic, or natural, styles – especially for homes about to go on the market.

4. Nautical Motifs

Almost everyone has visited a home, hotel, or restaurant painted and designed using a nautical theme – think anchors, lighthouse décor, fishing rods, seashells, and plenty of whites and blue hues. However, unless you live on a beach, this trend is out of place and out of style, and you achieve beachy vibes in a much more subtle manner.

5. Sponge Walls

This trend was quite popular back in the 1990s, mostly due to how easy it was to apply these textures to freshly painted walls; all you needed was a sponge! Though it did create texture, the bold, chic, smooth walls of most homes today are far more appealing and easier to complement.

If you’re still unsure about how to repaint or redesign your space, you shouldn’t hesitate to consult with a team of professionals for ideas and guidance. You’d be surprised at how the right coat of paint can completely transform the look and atmosphere of any room in your home!
